There are many independent bakeries in Gloucestershire, the Cotswolds and the Forest of Dean. They all bake their own speciality bread; some even bake cakes. Bread comes in many forms, from artisan white slice loaves to healthier brown wholegrain loaves or rolls. Some bake seeded batches and also the @aboutglos favourite, the malted loaf.

Some bakeries have retail outlets; others sell their baked goods through independent shops and farmers’ markets throughout the county.

Authentic Bread is an organic wholesale bakery based in Longhope in rural Gloucestershire. They use traditional methods and the best organic ingredients to produce a wide variety of bread, cakes, pastries and biscuits. The company has been trading since 1995 and has received many awards and accolades for its products.

Salt Bakehouse

Salt Bakehouse has a stall at Stroud Farmers’ Market where they sell their delicious artisan breads. This includes some fantastic-tasting brown and white loaves. Salt Bakehouse is an artisan bakery with locations in the Stroud area. They have won many awards for their breads, including at the World Bread Awards. SALT Bakehouse also has stores in Gloucestershire, including in Stroud. You can also buy their bread from specialist food shops throughout the county, including the Jolly Nice Farm Shop.

The Crusty Loaf Bakery in Coleford

The Crusty Loaf Bakery in Coleford is an award-winning bakery and is the place to shop if you love bread or cakes. I’ve tried most of their bread rolls, white and brown, during my walking break. However, their brown malted roll was my favourite. They also offer many cakes. All were delicious, including carrot cake and Eccles cakes, to name a few.

The Artisan Baker in Stroud

The Artisan Baker has a stall at Stroud Farmer’s Market with an interesting range of bread products. They are an award-winning organic micro-bakery from the Cotswolds. Products include sourdough, rye breads, regular loaves, and more. They also have a shop in the Five Valleys Market in Stroud. They are considered one of the best bakeries in the Cotswolds.

Jane’s Pantry

Jane’s Pantry has locations across the county, including Gloucester city centre and Churchdown. Jane’s Pantry is a local bakery that sells breads, cakes and pastries. They are a great place for things to take home or sandwiches to eat out. My favourite is their brown bread, which they use for sandwiches, including their epic coronation chicken one. Their pies and savoury pastries are delicious too, including their lamb slice and curry pasty. For those with a sweet tooth, the Jane’s Pantry Gloucester dripping cake is wonderful.
