Goldwork Guild

Goldwork Exhibition comes to the Nature in Art Museum and Art Gallery

The Goldwork Exhibition comes to the Nature in Art Museum and Art Gallery in Twigworth, Gloucester from 20th August 2019 until 8th September. Rarely seen, yet glittering to behold, a magnificent display of gold, silver and metal work embroidery comes to Gloucester for the first time.

The Goldwork Guild is displaying modern as well as a few antique textiles, and also demonstrating this ancient craft at the Nature in Art Museum and Art Gallery, Wallsworth Hall.

This work dates back over 2000 years when only royals, nobility and those of great wealth could afford such magnificence in garments, robes, domestic furnishings and religious embroidery. It is one of the oldest embroidery techniques, using metal threads to create articles of great beauty and sumptuousness.

In 2004 the Goldwork Guild of Embroiderers was established by Janice Williams, graduate of the Royal School of Needlework and Master Goldworker.

She says “ Due to the length of time it takes to create these beautiful works of art, the Goldwork Guild can only put on an exhibition every three years, and this we do in different parts of the country. This year we are delighted to be exhibiting in the magnificent splendour of Nature in Art, Wallsworth Hall, which is also steeped in history.”

Today in the 21st century, ceremonial, military, and religious attire is still adorned with the richness of gold and silver embroidery. The goldwork that enhances the robes of royalty, peers, dignatories and that of religious, ceremonial and domestic textiles, is still being worked today.

Throughout the exhibition, members of the Goldwork Guild will be demonstrating and working on their own goldwork projects as well as answering questions about this specialist art form. Their work may be traditional or contemporary in design, but nevertheless each will be using techniques which have stood the test of time and are as ancient as the art itself.
