@aboutglos has always had an interest in the paranormal and have recently been watching some great TV shows relating to the topic. My interest started after hearing campfire stories when younger, some ghost stories were really terrifying. Through life, I have experienced a few unexplainable events including some in Gloucestershire. The last one being odd noises and feeling of something passing while enjoying a beer in the New Inn in Gloucestershire.
What is the Paranormal?
The paranormal can best be thought of as a subset of pseudoscience. What sets the paranormal apart from other pseudosciences is a reliance on explanations for alleged phenomena that are well outside the bounds of established science. Thus, paranormal phenomena include extrasensory perception, telekinesis, ghosts, poltergeists, life after death, reincarnation, faith healing, human auras etc.
Paranormal TV Shows
Some of the paranormal activity in Gloucestershire has been shown on various television shows.
Most Haunted a Channel 4 reality TV show presented by Yvette Fielding who is joined by a variety of experts including mediums, historians and parapsychologists. The show visited and filmed at Owlpen Manor a Tudor house located between Dursley and Stroud. The manor house it located in a secluded location in its own valley in the Cotswolds.
Gloucestershire’s Owlpen Manor is reported to have a bewildering array of ghosts including a former Queen of England, a 17th-century alchemist, a mischievous child and the ‘Black Monk’. The Most Haunted team visited to investigate for the premier episode of their 4th series.
The manor has a rich history including a visit from Queen Margaret of Anjou the wife of Henry VI just before the battle of Tewkesbury. The show has some interesting snippets of history regardless of where you are a believer or sceptic.
Ancient Ram Inn
The Ancient Ram Inn is a Grade II* listed building and a former pub located in Wotton-under-Edge. It is said to be one of the most haunted hotels in the country which is what attracted the Ghost Adventures team to visit in their 8th episode and finale of their 2nd season. Ghost Adventures is a long-running American TV show that investigates paranormal activity using science and experiences.
The Ancient Ram Inn was built in around 1145 and has a rich and dark history. The site used to be a pagan burial ground, a site of alleged sacrifices of children and connections to Stonehenge via lay lines.
Their investigation highlighted EVPs or electronic voice phenomena as well as some disembodied voices and laughter. Dark mists were spotted as well as doors closing were featured and the series is a great watch.
There are many historic pubs in Gloucestershire and many have documented sightings of ghosts and unexplained going on. Lots of these local events are recorded on the website which is a fascinating read.
