The many old but restored Victorian warehouses that make an interesting backdrop for the Tall Ships Festival. Gloucester docks formed when the Canal from Sharpness opened in 1827 and allowed boats to bypass a treacherous part of the River Severn. The ships usually arrive via the canal after travelling up the Bristol Channel.
