Greenacres Campsite in Coleford
The Greenacres campsite is a family-run, dog-friendly site near Coleford in the Forest of Dean, near the picturesque Wye Valley. The campsite sits in a rural, secluded location but is easily accessible by car, hiking, or, in my case, bus.

We arrived on the number 30 Stagecoach bus from Gloucester, disembarking at Pikehouse, then walking along the quiet road directly to the site. The owner greeted us on arrival and told us to take any vacant slot, as it was quiet despite the glorious weather predicted for the week.

Greenacres Campsite Facilities
Greenacres has about 40 pitches suitable for tents of all sizes, caravans, and motorhomes. Each pitch has an electric hookup, and the owner provided an adaptor so we could charge phones and vapes in our little dome tent.

The site has well-maintained and clean shower and toilet facilities with constant hot water. Outside the shower block are 3 sinks dedicated to washing up, a pleasant and very useful touch. A shop in the reception area had tourist information leaflets and sold cold drinks and ice cream (my breakfast on the last day of the visit). The campsite has a
dedicated playing field for children with a play area and was quiet
at night when we were there.
Dog-Friendly
They permitted dogs on-site, and many, including ours, enjoyed the dog-friendly campsite. The big water bowl near reception was a pleasant touch and very appreciated on arrival.
Fire Pits

The site provides raised fire pits and sells logs with kindling, which is a great idea that lets campers enjoy a campfire without scorching the grass. We used this most nights and in the morning to boil water for coffee.
Food From Coleford
We brought a separate raised barbecue to cook breakfast and evening meals. We typically cooked barbecue food, including chicken kebabs, local sausages, and bacon from the nice butchers in Coleford. Lunches were typically sourced from The Crusty Loaf bakery and Forest Deli, with special mention of the bakery’s malted rolls and the deli’s Single Gloucester cheese. Tesco and the Co-op have stores in the town. Both were utilised, and I wish there were more Co-ops like this one elsewhere.

What’s near Greenacres Campsite in Coleford?

The campsite is located very near to Coleford in the heart of the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley. We regularly walked from the campsite to Coleford, crossing farmland and then heading downhill through Angus Buchanan VC Memorial Recreation Ground, a beautiful meadow towards the town.
Coleford Town
Coleford itself is a small market town with a wonderful selection of independent shops for food and some other useful shops, like the hardware shop and the Sue Ryder charity shop, where we bought extra bedding for the chilly night. There were a few takeaways useful for campers who didn’t want to cook, and, as mentioned on Google, reviews of a Chinese takeaway that delivers to the campsite.

We enjoyed some great days out and a few relaxing chill-out days on the site, including
Wye Valley Adventure

A walk from nearby Staunton, down to the Wye Valley at Biblins, then upstream to Symonds Yat for a pint of cider at The Saracen’s Head Inn. We then took a Kingfisher Cruise on the River Wye. To round off the day, we walked along the river to Monmouth for an evening meal before taking a taxi back to Greenacres Campsite.
Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail

A bus trip to Beechenhurst Lodge to walk the Sculpture Trail, finishing up for another cider at The Speech House Hotel.
Walk to Monmouth
I thoroughly enjoyed a full-day hike to Monmouth while on a camping holiday at Greenacres. This was straight from the camp onto the burial trail towards Newland. Next, we visited the beautiful village of Redbrook on the River Wye. Then walking along the river towards Monmouth.
Forest of Dean Camping Review
The campsite was in a great picturesque location in Gloucestershire and is good value. I will return over the summer because of its great location, accessibility, and dog-friendly facilities. The owners were pleasant when needed and even gave me a lift to the Coleford bus stop when I left.
