Dog-Friendly Gloucester – Pubs, Cafes & Restaurants
Finding a dog-friendly place to eat and drink can sometimes be a challenge, so we have built this section from my research with the dog in tow. This includes Gloucester’s restaurants, pubs, cafes, and other eateries. Some establishments allow canine guests inside, others only in outdoor areas, and some embrace the concept with treats and water bowls for dogs. There are also many options for pet-friendly places in Gloucestershire.
Dog-Friendly Restaurants
I have enjoyed eating out with a dog in tow at the following restaurants, which have a clear ‘dog-friendly’ policy on their websites.
Portivo Lounge
On Llanthony Road, near the docks and Gloucester Quays, is The Portivo Lounge, a lovely eatery that serves a range of food and drinks in a relaxed atmosphere. The lounge has indoor and outdoor seating, ideal for humans and dogs. Food served includes brunch options, such as the humble bacon sandwich and a full English or vegetarian breakfast.
Personally, I chose the shared tapas on my last visit, including calamari, hummus, five-spice pulled pork, meatballs, and teriyaki chicken. They also have an extensive selection of mains, burgers and puddings to suit all tastes, including many healthy ones.
Brewhouse & Kitchen
A waterfront restaurant on the banks of the Gloucester-Sharpness Canal near The Quays. They made us feel very welcome during our meal at Brewhouse and Kitchen, and they also provided a fresh bowl of water for our puppy to keep him refreshed.
This place is a lovely eatery and microbrewery. The brewing-themed decor is tastefully executed. There was a wonderful choice of drinks on offer, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic.
Dog-Friendly Pubs & Bars in Gloucester
Some excellent places to go for a drink, indoors or out in a beer garden.
Dr Fosters in Gloucester Docks
A waterfront pub and restaurant on the docks that has an enormous bar and a diverse menu. Seating is available in the bar area, in the upstairs restaurant, in the courtyard, or even outside overlooking the water.
Dr Fosters is a nice, well-decorated venue with friendly staff who gave the dog snacks and water. They have a sign out the front stating that muddy boots and paws are welcome. A good thing.
The Fountain Inn
Also on Westgate St is The Fountain Inn, a traditional pub serving food and real ale. They were very dog-friendly and had water and dog treats on the bar. We enjoyed Sunday lunch with some premium lager while the puppy observed. The Inn has a traditional pub feel inside and a large garden with plenty of seating. I will return.
The Turk’s Head Inn
The Turk’s Head Inn on St Aldate Street near Kings Square makes it clear dogs are welcome on the sign at the entrance; they also have dog treats on the bar. They have 28 different cider options, so it is a paradise for cider lovers. They also offer a range of lagers and real ales. We visited many times with Henry, our dog, and met other pets here too.
The New Inn
On Northgate Street in the city centre is The New Inn, a timber-framed pub with a medieval courtyard. The pub area to the right and the outside seating in the courtyard are dog-friendly, and I have enjoyed a few pints there, including Gloucester Brewery’s IPA, on the last swift one. It’s often quiet in the daytime and a nice place for a chilled beer or two.
The King Edward in Longlevens
In Longlevens is The King Teddy, a good local pub and restaurant with very nice food, including many pub classics.
Blue Bamboo Sports Bar
A sports bar at Gloucester Docks near the Mariners’ Church, with indoor and outdoor seating. On entry, they have a bowl of water for pets, and on my visit, they made the dog very welcome.
The bar can be a quiet place to drink when sporting events aren’t on, but not when they are. It can be busy. They had a good range of drinks and, for a snack, @aboutglos enjoyed some of their barbecue wings.
Hare & Hounds in Churchdown
As with most Greene King pubs, the Hare & Hounds is also dog-friendly. They also have a lovely garden which is ideal after walkies. The Hare & Hounds also has a water station in its garden. It is a nice place with an excellent selection of beers. They also serve some traditional pub grub, too.
Dick Whittington
Located near the bottom of Westgate Street, close to St Nicholas’ Church. The Dick Whittington is a pet-friendly drinking hole with a reputation for serving a good range of ciders, real ales, and imported lagers. An award-winning cider maker from Severn Cider runs the independent pub.
The venue has many live music events in its basement area and supports local musicians. The bar area is a traditional old-school pub and has a pool table. They offer a home-cooked menu, and the place has a great vibe.
Cafes
Some great cafes to visit for a daytime coffee or light bite in Gloucester.
Hubble Bubble
On Westgate Street is Hubble Bubble. Hubble Bubble is a coffee house and eatery with indoor or outdoor seating. Opened in 2013, the coffee house prides itself on being independent and family-run. They support local food producers by only using locally sourced meats on their interesting menu.
The menu features dishes like the full English breakfast and its plant-based versions. Lunchtime bites like double Gloucester cheese on toast made with local Hobbs House bread. Someone told me they are pet-friendly, but I haven’t tested it yet with my Cavalier.
Dog-Friendly Accommodation
The Thatch Inn in Quedgeley
The Thatch Inn in Quedgeley is a pet-friendly restaurant, hotel, and pub. It is one of the oldest pubs in Gloucestershire and has a beautiful historic building. The exterior is picturesque, and inside there are low ceilings and exposed beams. They serve a great range of beers, including Korev, a great Cornish beer. Their food is delicious for both lunch and an evening meal. It’s a great place to stay, and their dog-friendly rooms are very comfortable.
Linden Tree Inn
The Linden Tree Inn is in a Grade II Listed Georgian building on Bristol Road near the Quays. The Linden Tree Inn is a family-friendly drinking establishment with a function room, skittles alley, and pool table. They serve all the usual drinks, including a few real ales, draught lagers and spirits. Food ranges from a basic sandwich and basket meals to a Sunday Roast and many other good-value meals.
The Linden Tree is also a B&B, ideal for a stay in the city, including single, double or family rooms. Guest accommodation includes a full English breakfast, free Wi-Fi and parking.
